Overview

This interactive unit examines principles and practices of leadership which are vital for aspiring leaders of the future. Through a personal portfolio of leadership concepts, character, and competencies, you will develop your potential for growth as strategic leaders of the 21st century organisations. Inspiring stories of leadership successes and failures from exemplary leaders in the past and present will guide your leadership journey to find your own authentic voice. A plethora of cutting-edge leadership materials (research articles, movies and videos, case studies, role-plays, games, self-assessments) will also be featured weekly to enhance your learning experience.

Learning outcomes

  1. Summer semester B and First semester: articulate, navigate, and value the unique and intersecting components of your leader identity Second semester: analyse how leader identity is shaped by the interactive influence of life experiences and broader environments, drawing on theories and research related to identity and leadership
  2. Summer semester B and First semester: construct and communicate a personal leadership framework based on major theories of leadership Second semester: construct personal and collective (team-based) leadership approaches through the consideration of leader identity, leadership theories, and empirical research findings
  3. Summer semester B and First semester: apply global perspectives of leadership to positively impact individuals, organisations, communities, and the environment Second semester: communicate a personal leadership approach in professional peer-review settings
  4. Summer semester B and First semester: critically assess the quality, inclusivity and impact of the concepts within leadership literature on and for various stakeholders Second semester: apply research skills to analyse data in order to generate theory-informed and evidence-based insights into leadership processes
  5. demonstrate knowledge or skills for crafting sustainable futures for people, organisations, communities, and/or the environment.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
