In this unit you will be introduced to key concepts in health, wellbeing and disease prevention in nursing and midwifery practice, emphasising global, public and primary health dimensions. You will develop an understanding of planetary, global, public and primary health considerations through a sustainability lens. You will explore these concepts within the role of nurses and midwives in enhancing health outcomes for women and their families.

Learning outcomes
- Critically analyse health care systems within a global context to distinguish differences in health care delivery.
- Analyse the principles and philosophies of global, public and primary health within a respectful maternity care framework.
- Analyse the strengths and limitations of using key health indicator data to improve health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and women from priority populations.
- Apply evidence based research and justify how planetary, global, public and primary health impacts healthcare delivery.
- Critically evaluate the sustainable development goals and identify how nurses and midwives can integrate the goals into practice.
- Demonstrate developing clinical competence based upon the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife standards for practice and Code of conduct for midwives, and the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) International Code of Ethics for Midwives.
Workload
10 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed learning including tutorials, interprofessional learning, Fetal Surveillance Education Program seminar and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
