Overview

Developing advanced practice skills and providing leadership makes an important difference to the health and wellbeing of women and babies when there are issues with lactation and infant feeding. In this unit you will examine advanced midwifery/nursing knowledge and skill in supporting women experiencing breastfeeding issues/problems, supporting women and families to achieve effective infant feeding and nutrition and examine breastfeeding from a cultural and community perspective.

Learning outcomes

  1. Analyse the physiological processes underpinning different stage of human lactation.
  2. Critically examine the issues that may arise and interventions available to support women during lactation.
  3. Critically analyse the role of the advanced practice midwife/nurse and other health professionals in supporting women who experience issues with lactation and infant feeding.
  4. Design a plan for supporting lactation and infant feeding for an infant with special and/or nutritional needs.
  5. Examine the use of advanced communication skills to engage and educate women and families who experience issues with lactation and infant feeding.
  6. Differentiate between lactation and infant feeding practice across cultures and communities.
  7. Critically analyse evidenced-based midwifery and/or nursing management of women and families experiencing lactation and infant feeding issues.

Workload

12 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed learning including tutorials and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
