In this unit you will explore the fundamental principles of diagnostics and screening relevant to midwifery practice. Throughout this unit you will look at ways in which to apply critical reasoning to contemporary midwifery practice in relation to diagnostic and screening responsibilities. This unit will equip you with essential knowledge and skills to initiate referral for diagnostic and screening procedures effectively and interpret results accurately. Emphasising evidence-based approaches, you will explore legal and ethical considerations, effective communication strategies and collaborative practice across the broader health system to provide women-centred care within the midwifery scope of practice.

Learning outcomes
- Explain the fundamental principles of diagnostics and screening relevant to midwifery practice.
- Analyse and interpret diagnostic results with accuracy, demonstrating clinical reasoning and applying critical thinking to inform decision making and women centred care.
- Analyse legal and ethical considerations and apply these to diagnostic testing and screening in midwifery.
- Examine how effective communication with women about diagnostic options can ensure informed decision-making, acknowledgement of health literacy, cultural context and respect for their preferences.
- Develop and justify appropriate management plans based on diagnostic findings and evidence-based guidelines.
- Critique the importance of collaborative practice with other health professionals and appropriate referral to enhance the diagnostic and screening process.
- Evaluate personal practice in diagnostic and screening activities, identifying areas for improvement and professional growth.
Workload
