Overview

This unit introduces physical hazards including noise, vibration, heat, cold, radiation and pressure effects and conditions such as work-related musculoskeletal disorders that are common in workplaces, the effects on human health, and prevention and control measures to improve work health and safety. You will examine and apply a range of approaches to identify and control physical hazards and risks and develop evidence-based recommendations for improving practice.

Learning outcomes

  1. Identify and analyse the properties and health effects of common work-related physical hazards
  2. Identify common work-related musculoskeletal disorders and preventive strategies
  3. Apply legislation relevant to physical hazards in the work environment
  4. Apply a range of approaches to identify, assess and control physical hazards and risks including a systems approach, risk management process, the hierarchy of controls, and design of work
  5. Communicate fluently using appropriate terminology to describe work-related physical hazards and risks and their prevention and control
  6. Interpret the assessment results and develop and effectively communicate appropriate recommendations for risk controls.

Workload

12 hours per week comprising 6 hours self-directed study/learning per week, plus 4 hours teacher directed learning per week, plus 3 on-campus block days.
