This unit introduces physical hazards including noise, vibration, heat, cold, radiation and pressure effects and conditions such as work-related musculoskeletal disorders that are common in workplaces, the effects on human health, and prevention and control measures to improve work health and safety. You will examine and apply a range of approaches to identify and control physical hazards and risks and develop evidence-based recommendations for improving practice.

Learning outcomes
- Identify and analyse the properties and health effects of common work-related physical hazards
- Identify common work-related musculoskeletal disorders and preventive strategies
- Apply legislation relevant to physical hazards in the work environment
- Apply a range of approaches to identify, assess and control physical hazards and risks including a systems approach, risk management process, the hierarchy of controls, and design of work
- Communicate fluently using appropriate terminology to describe work-related physical hazards and risks and their prevention and control
- Interpret the assessment results and develop and effectively communicate appropriate recommendations for risk controls.
Workload
12 hours per week comprising 6 hours self-directed study/learning per week, plus 4 hours teacher directed learning per week, plus 3 on-campus block days.
