Overview

In this unit you will have the opportunity to review anatomy, physiology and function of skin, explore the phases of wound healing, define different types of healing, as well as summarise cellular processes involved in wound healing. Learning opportunities will help you develop your critical appraisal skills in wound literature and analyse factors enhance and/or delay healing. This knowledge will enable you to apply these principles into practice using case-based learning.

Learning outcomes

  1. Describe the physiological and cellular processes of wound healing and associated pathophysiology.
  2. Distinguish the cellular physiology of acute and chronic wounds, and describe their typical clinical characteristics and appearance.
  3. Appraise relevant evidence-based literature that will inform clinical practice when caring for those with acute or chronic wounds.
  4. Determine all relevant factors that impact on wound healing in individuals with acute or chronic wounds.
  5. Apply effective communication strategies when discussing the principles of wound healing.

Workload

6 hours of self-directed learning per week, and up to 4 hours of teacher directed activity which may include online lectures and discussion forums. Total per week = 10 hours
