Overview

In this unit you will have the opportunity to build fundamental skills in wound assessment, including the holistic assessment of individuals with wounds. This knowledge will enable you to successfully advocate for individuals living with wounds to further enhance their ongoing care. Learning opportunities will build your skills in wound documentation and ongoing communication with health professionals. The skills and knowledge developed in this unit underpins subsequent units in the wound care course.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply a holistic approach to the systematic assessment of people with wounds, incorporating physical, psychosocial, cultural and environmental factors.
  2. Identify and apply existing assessment strategies to inform a wound diagnosis and communicate this to the person, their carers and the relevant multidisciplinary team(s).
  3. Formulate person-centered goals of care, in consultation with individuals and their carers, based on a holistic assessment of a person with a wound.
  4. Distinguish how cross-cultural values and ethical requirements impact on the assessment of people with wounds.
  5. Recognise and apply professional communication strategies when advocating for people with wounds who require multidisciplinary team management.

Workload

8 hours of self-directed learning per week, and up to 2 hours of teacher directed activity which may include online tutorial activities. Total per week = 10 hours
