Overview

This unit introduces you to the process of self-reflection, clinical communication, questioning and critical thinking in preparation for problem recognition, problem solving and maintaining personal well-being. Research, academic writing skills and knowledge of evidence-based professional practice equip you as a scholar and a nurse/midwife. The concepts of person-centredness (nursing) and woman-centredness (midwifery) are explored from the perspective of self, examining personal values, sets of beliefs, cultural perspectives, attitudes toward others, and factors that influence health across the lifespan.

Learning outcomes

  1. Identify key factors that influence health across the lifespan, inclusive of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and other vulnerable populations;
  2. Apply beginning level critical thinking and reflective practice that enables effective person-centred care;
  3. Demonstrate therapeutic and clinical communication skills in all formats;
  4. Describe beginning level research skills, including database searching and academic writing;
  5. Apply evidence-based practice in the provision of effective health care;

Workload

12 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed learning including tutorials, simulation tutorial and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
