This unit introduces you to advanced, evidence-based, clinically relevant palliative care practices to support patients; families and carers to facilitate quality and dignity at the end of life. This unit prepares you to work collaboratively with interprofessional teams across specialist and other care settings. You will develop a deeper understanding of local, national and international palliative and end of life care contexts; models of care; end of life communication; cultural and religious considerations; loss, grief and bereavement; medico-legal, and ethical issues; and care of professional carers.

Learning outcomes
- Examine common issues associated with delivery of holistic palliative and end of life care in a variety of health care contexts
- Demonstrate empathetic communication skills in end of life care contexts
- Plan management for deteriorating patients and/or when patients are not responding well to interventional care in consideration of family and proxy decision makers
- Identify when patients are approaching the end of life and select appropriate models of care
- Discuss and facilitate advance care planning in practice
- Identify strategies for building your own capability to manage and support end of life care in your area of practice
Workload
