Overview

This unit introduces you to nursing across the lifespan in a variety of healthcare settings. Founded in person and family centred care and evidence-based practice principles, the milestones and transitional periods across people's lives are explored. Socio-political and psychosocial factors that influence well-being and access to, and provision of healthcare are considered. Nursing roles and different models of care in terms of the changing needs of people across the lifespan, including those living with disability, chronic conditions, dementia and people requiring end of life care are examined.

Learning outcomes

  1. Examine the key principles and approaches to persons and family centred care.
  2. Identify key developmental milestones and life stages for the delivery of person and family centred nursing care.
  3. Critique the role of the nurse in caring for people across the lifespan, in different healthcare contexts.
  4. Explore the socio-political and psychosocial factors that impact on people across the lifespan living with illness, chronic conditions, disability, cognitive decline, and dementia.
  5. Analyse approaches to effectively communicate with patients, their families and the healthcare team.

Workload

3 hours of teacher directed study per week comprised of 1 x 3-hour tutorial (total 24 hrs) 9 hours per week of self-directed /online study (120hrs)
