Overview

Cancer nursing requires specialised skills and knowledge to provide care to the complex needs of patients with cancer. This unit introduces the advanced knowledge and skills required of specialist cancer nurses, enabling you to implement contemporary and advanced nursing practice to provide optimal and holistic, person-centred care. This unit includes topics such as the epidemiology of cancer across the lifespan, diagnosis of cancer and goals of care, evidence-based treatment of cancer including new and emerging treatment, effective nursing management of complications of cancer, and treatment including oncology emergencies.

Learning outcomes

  1. Perform clinically at a minimum required standard, in accordance with the National Cancer Nursing Education Project (EdCaN) ANMC Competency Standards for Registered Nurses – cancer control.
  2. Critically analyse clinical information to differentiate the underlying pathophysiological processes, aetiology and clinical manifestations related to cancer.
  3. Apply the principles of systematic patient assessment using applied knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
  4. Critically evaluate clinical information of patient deterioration and implement effective management strategies needed for optimal patient outcomes.
  5. Plan, prioritise, implement and evaluate person centred care and specialist nursing management for a person with cancer.
  6. Apply health education and health promotion strategies for people with cancer using a person, family and/or community centred approaches.
  7. Apply the National Safety and Quality and Health Service Standards (NSQHS) principles to develop strategies aimed at improving the safety and quality of cancer care.
  8. Communicate knowledge skills associated with the care of people with cancer to others in a professional and empathetic manner.

12 credit point unit = 288 total hours per semester 24 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed study, including tutorial and online activities
