Overview

Care of the patient with a neuroscience condition requires specialised nursing skills and knowledge to address the complex needs of the patient. In this unit you will develop specialised knowledge and skills that will enable you to assess, plan, prioritise, implement and evaluate appropriate nursing care of the acute neuroscience patient. You will also implement health promotion and educational principles, while considering evidence-based practices for those with neuroscience conditions. This unit will enable you to develop an understanding of evidence-based treatment including new and emerging treatment and effective nursing management of complications.

Learning outcomes

  1. Perform clinically at a minimum required standard in accordance with Australasian Neuroscience Nursing Association (ANNA) Professional standards for neuroscience nurses (ANNA).
  2. Analyse clinical information to differentiate underlying pathophysiological processes, aetiology, and clinical manifestations related to neurological conditions.
  3. Plan, prioritize, implement, and evaluate specialist nursing assessment and management for individuals with neurological conditions.
  4. Implement health promotion and educational principles in the care of a person with a neuroscience condition to ensure optimal health outcomes.
  5. Evaluate the evidence-based practice when caring for a person with a neuroscience condition and their significant others.
  6. Differentiate the purpose of multidisciplinary team collaborations in the management of an individual with neurological conditions considering the person, family, and/or community-centred approach.
  7. Distinguish and justify the legal and ethical considerations of the patient with a neuroscience condition.
  8. Evaluate how your advanced knowledge, skills and attitudes contribute to the profession of neuroscience nursing practice.

Workload

24 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed study, including tutorial and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
