The unit will provide you with the foundational knowledge and skills for nursing practice with an emphasis on physical health assessment. You will study key concepts, including pharmacology, asepsis, hygiene and a patient-centred approach to nursing care. Clinical practice experience is an integral component of this unit and concentrates on the attainment of skills, knowledge and competency in fundamental patient care.

Learning outcomes
- Apply anatomical and physiological knowledge to patient assessment and care planning.
- Integrate theory, clinical problem solving, communication and decision-making skills to systematically assess patients.
- Evaluate patient assessment data to inform nursing care interventions.
- Plan, implement and evaluate of nursing care using a patient-centred approach.
- Reflect on, and evaluate, self performance related to knowledge, skills and delivery of nursing care.
- Apply the principles of pharmacology to therapeutic drug administration and monitoring to ensure medication safety.
- Perform fundamental nursing skills to maintain and ensure patient safety using an evidence-based approach.
- Determine appropriate nursing care for a dying patient.
- Demonstrate practice at a beginning level in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered nurse standards for practice, Code of conduct for nurses and the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Code of ethics for nurses.
Workload
12 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed learning including tutorials, clinical learning environments and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
