Overview

This unit introduces you to the core elements of Emergency Management, inclusive of disaster classifications, theoretical frameworks and risk reduction concepts. In this unit, you will examine the key determinants of quality leadership, international competencies in disaster nursing, and safe and ethical concepts to enhance resilience amongst healthcare professionals.

Learning outcomes

  1. Identify the classifications and severity of disaster incidents impacting healthcare settings.
  2. Examine universal disaster theoretical frameworks used to mitigate impacts on healthcare settings.
  3. Assess the value and quality of leadership skills needed when striving for disaster resilience in healthcare settings.
  4. Differentiate the roles of command, control and collaboration across healthcare settings when responding to disaster events.
  5. Evaluate the Global Disaster Risk Reduction concepts impact on local, national and international healthcare settings.
  6. Describe and evaluate the resources available to enhance resilience of the healthcare workforce in times of disasters.
  7. Identify the concepts of the safe hospital index and apply these to any healthcare setting in a disaster event.
  8. Identify the special needs of vulnerable populations in disaster situations.

Workload

24 hours per week of teacher facilitated and self-directed learning including tutorials and online activities. Please refer to Moodle for tutorial types and requirements.
