This unit introduces you to disaster health management and the role of leadership within the multidisciplinary healthcare workforce during a disaster incident. In this unit you will examine effective health professional leadership decision–making, and review government policies and guidelines including risk assessment and business continuity planning. You will also explore disaster preparedness in multiple healthcare settings, and gain an understanding of the importance of educating future health professionals in disaster preparedness.

Learning outcomes
- Select effective health professional leadership decision-making and risk-averse skills under the uncertainty of a low probability but high consequence disaster event.
- Analyse how health professional leaders communicate during the challenges of crisis management and evaluate the effectiveness of the communication
- Understand and apply government policies and guidelines that healthcare settings are required to use in their management for disaster events
- Prioritise the requirements for Business Continuity planning in the context of disaster risk reduction
- Discuss disaster preparedness of healthcare settings related to natural disasters climate change impacts
- Promote educating future health professionals in disaster preparedness
- Identify the concepts of the safe hospital index and apply these to any healthcare setting in a disaster event
Workload
