Nurses working in different contexts of trauma care require specialist trauma knowledge and the skill-base to assess and manage trauma patients throughout their journeys. In this unit, you will study trauma nursing principles and the essentials of managing the trauma patient. You will explore key factors associated with managing risks and providing evidence-based care to trauma patients across their journeys from initial trauma to recovery. You will examine the role of nurses in different contexts of trauma care, within the multidisciplinary team, and in the provision of quality care to trauma patients with varying needs.

Learning outcomes
- Describe the role and skills of the trauma nurse to support trauma care.
- Relate the causes and the mechanics of trauma injuries, to contemporary management of trauma patients.
- Analyse trauma care using evidence-based practice
- Apply clinical reasoning related to the pathophysiology of conditions for which patients require trauma management and care
- Plan and evaluate holistic person and family centred care and appropriate therapeutic interventions for patients related to a range of trauma injuries and experiences.
- Discuss issues and strategies for patients in transition between trauma care settings.
- Evaluate care of trauma patients with nursing and multidisciplinary teams
Workload
