Overview

Paediatric nursing requires specialised skills and understanding of advanced paediatric pathophysiology, systematic assessment, management, and care. This unit provides you with the opportunity to apply advanced paediatric nursing principles and practice to the care of children with complex conditions. You will develop knowledge and skills to assess and care for the seriously ill and/or deteriorating child or young person. The importance of health promotion and illness prevention to provide safe and quality care, in collaboration with parents/caregivers will be explored. The concepts associated with transition to adult or community-based services, palliative and end-of-life care will also be discussed. Your study will include elements of clinical leadership including the role of the advanced practice nurse in optimising quality outcomes and in applying relevant ethical, legal and socio-cultural principles influencing patient and family centred care for children and young people.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply the principles of systematic patient assessment based on an advanced knowledge of paediatric anatomy and physiology.
  2. Implement advanced nursing practice principles required to manage children and young people with complex disease states.
  3. Discuss and apply advanced practice nursing knowledge and skills to prioritise assessment and care of the seriously ill or deteriorating patient.
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of health promotion and illness prevention strategies for common paediatric presentations
  5. Implement effective quality transitions in care across care settings for children, young people and their families.
  6. Discuss the concepts underpinning end of life care and palliative care for children and families.
  7. Apply the skills and knowledge required to effectively and collaboratively undertake interdisciplinary team-based care across a variety of settings.
  8. Implement strategies to enhance leadership skills and apply these in everyday practice
  9. Evaluate the impact of clinical leadership strategies in paediatric nursing contexts.
  10. Analyse the ethical, legal and socio-cultural issues related to the advanced nursing management of the paediatric patient.
  11. Implement and evaluate the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standard in paediatric nursing contexts

Workload
