Overview

The unit draws its key strength from Theme 2 – Nutrition and Health, as you learn the roles of nutrition in the broader population, with an underpinning of Theme 3 - Nutrition Professional and Skills Development as you will be expected to develop professional ethics and values in the context of the population you work with. Nutritional epidemiology is a fundamental concept in public health nutrition where you will study how foods affect overall health and diseases in a population. In this unit, you will be introduced to the basics of epidemiology related to nutrition. This includes key concepts and methods of design, analysis and evaluation of population-based nutrition studies.

Learning outcomes

  1. Explain the basic principles of descriptive and analytical epidemiology.
  2. Describe epidemiological study designs, their strengths and limitations.
  3. Appraise evidence-based literature and research methods in the context of nutrition.
  4. Describe strategies to evaluate dietary and lifestyle factors in epidemiological studies.
  5. Interpret and communicate findings from epidemiological studies focusing on nutrition and public health.

Workload

6 hours of teacher-directed study per week, including 3 hours of lectures/pre-class activities, and 3 hours of tutorials/workshops. 6 hours per week of self-directed study. Total per week = 12 hours
