The unit draws its key strength from Theme 2 – Nutrition and Health, as you learn the roles of nutrition in the broader population, with an underpinning of Theme 3 - Nutrition Professional and Skills Development as you will be expected to develop professional ethics and values in the context of the population you work with. Nutritional epidemiology is a fundamental concept in public health nutrition where you will study how foods affect overall health and diseases in a population. In this unit, you will be introduced to the basics of epidemiology related to nutrition. This includes key concepts and methods of design, analysis and evaluation of population-based nutrition studies.

Learning outcomes
- Explain the basic principles of descriptive and analytical epidemiology.
- Describe epidemiological study designs, their strengths and limitations.
- Appraise evidence-based literature and research methods in the context of nutrition.
- Describe strategies to evaluate dietary and lifestyle factors in epidemiological studies.
- Interpret and communicate findings from epidemiological studies focusing on nutrition and public health.
Workload
6 hours of teacher-directed study per week, including 3 hours of lectures/pre-class activities, and 3 hours of tutorials/workshops. 6 hours per week of self-directed study. Total per week = 12 hours
