Overview

This unit addresses Theme 2 - Nutrition and Health, but reflects Theme 1- Foundation in Medical, Food and Nutritional Sciences and introduces you to Theme 3 – Nutrition Professional and Skills Development. This is one of the core nutrition unit which encompasses nutritional and health requirements and concerns across the life cycle including pregnancy and lactation, infants, children adolescents and older adults. The unit builds on basic knowledge and skills obtained from first year units including fundamental units in nutrition, biomedical sciences and psychology... Off-campus field visits to specific communities and subsequent discussions will further enhance the teaching and learning experience in the context of the real world.

Learning outcomes

  1. Discuss the growth and development at the different stages of the human lifecycle.
  2. Discuss the nutritional requirements and physical activity levels across the life cycle.
  3. Identify the factors that determine nutritional needs and the utilization of foods throughout the life cycle.
  4. Explain the major nutrition concerns in each stage of the life cycle.
  5. Apply evidence-based dietary recommendations and guidelines to promote optimal nutrition and health outcomes across the life span.
  6. Practice professionalism competency by applying nutrition knowledge across the lifespan.

Workload

6 hours of teacher directed study per week including 2 hours of lectures/week, 2 hours of tutorials fortnight, 3 hours of workshop/5 sessions and 2 x 8-hours of field visits. 6 hours per week of self-directed study Total per week = 12 hours
