Overview

This unit builds on the basic concepts and fundamentals of nutrition, expanding your knowledge of nutrition and dietary recommendations. You will explore how good nutrition supports healthy development from pre-conception to old age, taking a lifespan approach across the unit. You will cover nutrition requirements, stages of development, and health and eating behaviours (including theories of change) across the lifespan. In this unit you will also cover cultural, personal, economic and social factors that influence health behaviours specific to each life stage. You will apply your knowledge in case-based scenarios and developing evidence-based nutrition education resources.

Learning outcomes

  1. Utilise the socio-ecological model of health to describe factors that influence nutrition across the lifespan.
  2. Analyse and explain how psychosocial factors influence nutrition across the lifespan.
  3. Apply principles of health literacy to food intake and nutrition education
  4. Apply theories of behaviour change to nutrition across the lifespan.
  5. Communicate evidence informed nutrition information in various formats to different audiences
  6. Analyse and evaluate dietary intake across the lifespan using current nutritional recommendations.

Workload

All online learning. 6 hours of teacher-directed learning per week, including 1-2 hours of asynchronous video content and 12 x 2 hours of online workshop. 6 hours per week of student-directed learning. Total per week = 12 hours
