This unit is part of Theme 2 - 'Nutrition and Health' and draws knowledge and skills from Theme 1 units - 'Fundamentals of Biomedical Sciences' and 'Fundamentals of Human Nutrition'. In this unit you will learn the nutritional needs of a variety of active populations, focusing on exercise and sports. You will appreciate the role of foods and fluids in physical activity, exercise and sports performance. You will also learn the role of sports nutritionists in a multidisciplinary team.

Learning outcomes
- Describe benefits of maintaining active lifestyle and the consequences of inactivity.
- Describe the psychology of healthy eating among active individuals.
- Appraise the use and necessity of nutritional supplements in exercise and sports.
- Discuss evidence from current scientific literature on nutrition and exercise/sports.
- Analyse and critique exercise and sports nutrition guidelines and recommendations.
- Conduct dietary, hydration and anthropometric assessments for active individuals.
Workload
6 hours of teacher-directed study plus 6 hours of self-directed study per week. 3 x 1-hour lectures 1x 3 hour of tutorials every fortnight 1 x3 hours of practicals every fortnight. Total per week = 12 hours
