Overview

Monitoring and evaluation are essential components of determining nutritional status at both the individual, community and population level. The interpretation of anthropometry, biochemistry, clinical, dietary and environmental information (ABCDE framework) is therefore central to the work of nutrition scientists. In this unit, you will examine the methodological applications and limitations of nutrition assessment approaches used with individuals, communities and populations in varying contexts. You will be enabled to critically employ research and analytical skills when interpreting and evaluating nutrition assessment data, including identifying appropriate methods in terms of precision, validity, feasibility and reproducibility. The unit will also develop your ability to apply relevant guidelines, policies and recommendations to estimate nutritional requirements for populations and to support evidence-informed decision-making. You will be exposed to a range of methods across the ABCDE framework, as well as nutrition screening tools routinely used in clinical, research and population health settings.
