Overview

In this unit, you will explore how food and nutrition policies influence public health, with a focus on Malaysia’s national nutrition strategies. You will analyse policies addressing key issues such as malnutrition, obesity, and food security, while also evaluating global approaches to nutrition governance. Throughout the unit, you will engage in case studies, policy analysis, and discussions, enabling you to develop evidence-based policy recommendations that consider economic, cultural, and environmental factors. By applying critical thinking and research skills, you will learn to propose innovative solutions to nutrition-related challenges. By the end of the course, you will be equipped with the analytical, policy evaluation, and communication skills needed to contribute to nutrition policy development and advocacy. This course will prepare you for a future in public health, policy analysis, and food system management in Malaysia and beyond.

Learning outcomes

  1. Analyse the role of local food and nutrition policy in shaping public health outcomes
  2. Evaluate the local and global food policy in addressing the nutritional related challenges
  3. Propose evidence-based policy recommendations to improve nutritional outcomes, considering economic, cultural, and environmental factors.
  4. Communicate key findings of the case study based on the relevant policy.

Workload

18 hours of teacher-directed study per week, including 6 hours of lectures, 3 hours of tutorials, 6 hours of Workshops and 3 hours of Seminar. 18 hours per week of self-directed study. Total per week = 18 hours (Teacher directed) + 18 hrs (Student directed) =36 hours/ week Teacher directed: 18 hrs x 4 weeks = 72 hrs Student directed: 18 hrs x 4 weeks = 72 hrs
