Overview

In this unit, you will learn about the unique role of occupational therapists in comparison to other healthcare professionals. You will develop the skills required to demonstrate appropriate behaviour and beginner-level proficiency in occupational therapy professional skills such as communication, manual handling, activity analysis and occupational health and safety. You will gain an understanding of the professional behaviour, legal, cultural, and ethical considerations that are imperative in occupational therapy practice. The unit will also expose you to various simulated scenarios and case studies to equip you with the necessary skills to understand the challenges faced by clients and consumers of healthcare services.

Learning outcomes

  1. Articulate, evaluate, and demonstrate understanding of professional behaviours and ethical and legal issues pertinent to a practicing occupational therapist;
  2. Demonstrate emerging verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills for occupational therapy practice;
  3. Analyse and reflect on concepts of disability and its impact on individuals, families, carers, and significant others;
  4. Demonstrate competency in practice education skills relating to manual-handling, equipment use, and correct use of mobility techniques;
  5. Articulate, examine, and demonstrate the application of occupational health and safety considerations for settings where occupational therapists practice (i.e., infection control, hand hygiene, risk management);
  6. Apply task and activity analysis to the occupational therapy practice context.

Workload

Lecture component: 2 hours per week, Tutorial/Practicum component: 2 hours per week, Private study: 8 hours per week.
