Overview

In this unit, you will extend your interpretation of the role of paramedics as clinical leaders in major incident management. As major incidents vary in the number of casualties involved, environmental setting, and time frame, you will explore how major incident planning, recovery and response are coordinated between emergency services within the global context. Using evidence-based practice and your understanding of coordinated emergency services’ collaboration, you will acquire the knowledge to develop comprehensive management plans in response to a range of major incidents.

Learning outcomes

  1. Interpret the role of the paramedics, emergency services and other health agencies in relation to major incident management.
  2. Distinguish how the management of major incidents can be influenced by various factors.
  3. Examine policies, systems and frameworks and their impact on the maintenance of operations during a major incident.
  4. Compare and contrast the management of acute and protracted major incidents within the global context.
  5. Analyse how evidence-based practice impacts on emergency services’ planning, response and recovery of major incidents.
  6. Appraise how effective collaboration and coordination can improve the partnerships with emergency services and other health agencies.

Workload

• 2 hours of teacher-directed study per week including a combination of lectures, online interactive media and readings. • 3 hours per week of self-directed study. • 3 hours of practical classes per fortnight.
