Overview

In this unit you will continue to develop the knowledge and skills needed to care for the maternity patient during pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postnatal period, as well as for neonates. The unit will be case based and will include clinical skills practice and simulation. You will be supported to develop essential clinical, communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills in the context of maternity and newborn care.

Learning outcomes

  1. Describe the epidemiology and pathophysiology related to the maternity patient and the neonate.
  2. Apply and integrate the theoretical knowledge and clinical skills in the assessment and management of the maternity patient and the neonate.
  3. Demonstrate empathetic and respectful communication and collaboration with maternity patients, their families, support networks, and other health professionals.
  4. Analyse the significance of cultural responsiveness in delivering person-centred maternity care.
  5. Appraise the evidence that supports paramedic care of the maternity patient and neonate.
