Overview

This unit is the capstone clinical unit for the Master Paramedic Practitioner degree, consolidating your knowledge of paramedic practitioner assessment and management of acute and chronic medical presentations introduced in previous clinical units. This unit focusses on advanced assessment, management, prescribing and referral of patients with complex chronic conditions across the continuum of disease progression. An emphasis will be placed on fostering your interprofessional collaboration, navigating ethical dilemmas, and ensuring culturally competent, person-centred care. Through this unit you will emerge well-versed in the dynamic realm of urgent care, poised to deliver exemplary care and navigate the multifaceted challenges of this healthcare domain.

Learning outcomes

  1. Evaluate current knowledge of anatomy and physiology to interpret and manage commonly presenting abnormalities.
  2. Interpret and integrate theoretical knowledge and clinical skills to the assessment and management of patients with unique healthcare needs across the lifespan.
  3. Formulate appropriate pharmacotherapeutic regimes using relevant drugs available in community paramedicine.
  4. Evaluate how biopsychosocial factors uniquely impact the health and well-being of marginalised Australians, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations and people living in rural and remote area.
  5. Distinguish how Paramedic Practitioners collaborate with various healthcare workers to ensure optimal management of primary care conditions.
  6. Contribute to the development of the role of Paramedic Practitioner in community settings.

Workload

This unit will include a combination of online lectures, online activities, and tutorials (online or on-campus), totalling 6 hours per week. You will be expected to engage in self-directed study for approximately 6 hours per week.
