Overview

In this unit you will be introduced to concepts related to working specifically in an aeromedical environment. You will cover a range of fundamental topics such as: basics of aviation, introduction to meteorology, aviation physiology, retrieval and flight co-ordination, crew resource management, and survival skills.

Learning outcomes

  1. Discuss basic concepts relating to aviation, including aerodynamics, control surfaces and performance and limitations for both rotary and fixed wing aircraft and including basic meteorology;
  2. Assess the physiological effects of flight upon crew and patient(s) identifying strategies to appropriately manage a range of patient conditions;
  3. Justify the integral role of retrieval medicine within the broader health care system, identifying the factors to be considered when coordinating an aero medical retrieval;
  4. Appraise aspects of aviation safety including Crew Resource Management (CRM) to optimise safety practices within the aviation environment;
  5. Analyse the factors to be considered to work safely around both rotary and fixed wing aircraft; and
  6. Examine the concept of self-preservation following an aircraft incident and actions that can be taken to maximise one’s chances of survival.
