Overview

In this unit you will address the fundamental requirements for effective planning, leadership and the provision of definitive care for the complex retrieval and repatriation of sick and injured patients, both within the specialised aeromedical and also in non-specialised (commercial aircraft). You will explore content that will address the effects of altitude on susceptible medical, surgical and traumatic conditions and will emphasise the importance of appropriate in-flight equipment commonly used for patient monitoring and ventilatory and circulatory support. You will formulate clinical management strategies appropriate to your professional practice level including the prediction and prevention of potential aeromedical problems to ensure the safe and efficient transport of patients

Learning outcomes

  1. Evaluate the equipment and facilities available to facilitate care of a patient on non-dedicated aeromedical aircraft including commercial airlines;
  2. Analyse the implications of legal requirements and common international travel conventions related to transferring patients, equipment and medications from port to port to achieve a safe, successful patient retrieval;
  3. Predict the specific effects of altitude on susceptible medical, surgical and traumatic conditions;
  4. Develop pharmacotherapeutic and fluid administration plans to manage common conditions requiring aeromedical transport, demonstrating effective planning to manage potential complications that may arise;
  5. Formulate holistic patient care plans appropriate to the professional practice level of the student, demonstrating a comprehensive knowledge of medical equipment; and
  6. Devise clinical management strategies which will predict and prevent potential aeromedical complications that affect safe and efficient patient transport.
