Overview

This unit introduces you to an advanced level of knowledge and skill related to the critical care management of patients with complex respiratory conditions and airway emergencies. In this unit you will be learning about specific topics relating to the respiratory system inclusive of anatomy and physiology, disease and pathologies, and advanced respiratory assessments. Additionally you will expand on your management of critical airway and respiratory emergencies. Throughout this unit you will also engage with research evidence and utilise clinical knowledge and judgement to enable safe practices. You must be actively engaged in appropriate clinical practice or clinical simulation to achieve the outcomes of this unit.

Learning outcomes

  1. Synthesise anatomy and physiology knowledge to enable and construct accurate differential diagnoses of airway and respiratory emergencies.
  2. Interpret current research evidence to inform best practice in the management of respiratory emergencies.
  3. Utilise advanced clinical knowledge and judgement to enable safe practices.
  4. Integrate clinical reasoning and evidence informed care when implementing safe, complex airway management for critically unwell patients.
  5. Evaluate pharmacotherapeutic regimes for airway and respiratory conditions to optimise outcomes and minimise risk in complex clinical contexts.
  6. Analyse the impact of human factors non-technical skills and their impact on patient care.

Workload

You will be expected to complete at least 12 hours of distance education directed learning and a minimum of 12 hours of private study and self-directed learning per week.
