This unit will utilise a 'case study' approach to build on your previous learning about global health. The intent of this unit is not only to further your awareness of global health issues, but also to encourage critical thinking about the underlying causes and the efficacy of current global health programs and approaches. It aims to equip you to work in the area of global health both in Australia and abroad. You will learn about the main global health principles and frameworks including the sustainable development goals. You will analyse case studies of programs addressing some of the current global health challenges such as climate change, conflict, communicable and non-communicable diseases, non-intentional injuries, mental health, drugs and alcohol. You will increase their cultural capability in addressing Aboriginal health issues and learn about a 'strengths based approach'. Case studies demonstrating successes and failures in addressing global health challenges will be analysed to demonstrate the complexity of health improvement in low- and middle-income countries. You will learn about the use of appropriate technology, being culturally sensitive and participatory approaches. This module will also expose you to the various careers available to graduates with a health sciences background.
