This unit introduces you to the role of the pharmacist and health care services relating to consumers and their medicines. It introduces important aspects of human behaviour and cultural considerations, with a focus on enhancing professional communication with healthcare consumers and healthcare professionals. You will learn the fundamentals of pharmacy practice. Each student will build a portfolio to instil lifelong learning attributes and develop a personalised learning plan to advance their cognitive and non-cognitive skills.

Learning outcomes
- Reflect on identified strengths and weaknesses in communication and other non-cognitive skills via a Personalised Learning Plan to enhance professional skills required to practice as a pharmacist
- Comprehend basic ethical principles related to pharmacy
- Demonstrate the safe and ethical use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)
- Describe and apply guiding principles (e.g. regulatory frameworks, standards of practice, competencies and advanced practice) and standard references in Australian pharmacy practice
- Describe the role of sustainability in the context of pharmacy practice, and identify ways to promote ethical use of resources
- Find and interpret basic information about medicines and apply this to the treatment of minor ailments
- Describe and define the Australian healthcare system (primary, secondary and tertiary) and the role of healthcare professionals
- Identify and describe unsafe or less than optimal practices in pharmacy, with respect to health outcomes and legal and ethical considerations
- Observe, evaluate and reflect on specific aspects of pharmacy layout, workforce and the provision of professional services within a community pharmacy
- Understand key principles to support a constructive team climate, and work in teams to solve problems
- Describe and demonstrate the key principles and processes of good communication and cultural competence.
Workload
