This unit builds on your understanding of the role of the pharmacist in providing healthcare services to different patient groups. You will learn the fundamentals of dispensing prescriptions and medication counselling and further develop essential skills for pharmacy practice including communication skills. You will also learn about and develop skills in professionalism, mindfulness and cultural sensitivity to support best pharmacy practice. You will build on your portfolio to further instil lifelong learning attributes and continue to develop your personalised learning plan to advance cognitive and non-cognitive skills.

In-semester assessments100% This unit contains one or more competency hurdle assessment tasks that you must successfully complete to be able to pass the unit. You have one attempt, plus an additional assessment capped at 50% of the available marks for the task, to demonstrate your competency in the competency hurdle assessment task. If you fail to meet the hurdle requirement, you will receive a fail grade for the unit regardless of the total marks you achieve.

Learning outcomes
- Describe and apply a standardised patient-centred approach
- Diagnose, manage and communicate about simple healthcare issues in primary care, including counselling patients about medication and non-medication treatment strategies
- Provide patient counselling for medicines on the first year Pharmulary list
- Demonstrate safe and systematic procedures for the supply of medicines and the provision of professional advice
- Demonstrate an understanding of how mindfulness supports professional practice
- Identify and describe different illness behaviours including those impacting on medicine use
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and professionalism in consumer care
- Reflect on identified strengths and weaknesses in communication and other non-cognitive skills via a Personalised Learning Plan to enhance professional skills required to practice as a pharmacist
Workload
• Seventy-two hours of independent study • Twenty-four hours of pre-learning activities (up to 2 hours per week) • Twenty-four hours of active applied learning (2 hours a week) • Twenty-four hours of small group classes including assessment (2 hours per week) • Three 1-hour skills coaching sessions
