This unit will focus on the management of selected endocrine and renal conditions by relating the pathophysiology and clinical use of medicines and the development of a patient-specific care plan. This unit also introduces the concepts and applications of evidence-based practice, key components of medication safety and review and a systems-based approach to healthcare with respect to patients with complex needs. Pharmaceutical formulation principles and extemporaneous compounding techniques will be highlighted in this unit.

Learning outcomes
- Describe the signs and symptoms, diagnostic and epidemiological aspects of selected endocrine and renal conditions.
- List and prioritise pharmacological and non-drug therapy options for the management of selected endocrine and renal conditions.
- Evaluate a patient's endocrine or renal condition and create a complete, patient-specific care plan that applies established clinical guidelines and a comprehensive review of potential medication-related problems.
- Apply counselling strategies that optimise therapy outcomes including behavioural change for patients in the management of selected renal and endocrine conditions including when referral for medical assessment is required in selected cardiovascular, endocrine and renal conditions.
- Describe and apply the general principles concerning the formulation of various medicinal dosage forms including tablets and capsules, solutions, suspensions and emulsions and extemporaneously compounded products and explain the rationale for the inclusion of each of the excipients.
- Define, incorporate, interpret and apply a standardised approach to patient-centred care.
- Interpret, retrieve, appraise and apply evidence-based practice.
- Explain the key components of medication safety and policy documents, in the context of a pharmacist and a systems-based approach to healthcare.
Workload
Workload requirements include online modules and interactive on-campus workshops and laboratories which require compulsory attendance. - Seventy-two hours of independent study - Twenty-four hours of pre-learning activities (2 hours per week) - Thirty-three hours of applied sessions and laboratory workshops (3 hours per week)
