Applied Pharmacy Practice 1 is undertaken during the pharmacy internship year. This unit enables you as a pharmacy graduate to build upon your knowledge and experience and to develop the competencies required for independent practice as a pharmacist. The unit explores the day-to-day practice of pharmacy including therapeutics, problem solving, evidence based practice, medication management, patient monitoring, adherence to medication, the application of professional pharmacy standards and competencies, the ethical and legal aspects of pharmacy practice, multidisciplinary approaches to health care, primary care, communication and counselling, health promotion, pharmaceutical calculations, extemporaneous dispensing, risk management and dealing with difficult situations in practice. In this unit, you will enhance your technical, clinical, personal and professional skills.

You will be assessed using the Monash Competency Grading Schema for this unit. All tasks are competency hurdles which you must complete to be able to pass the unit. You have one attempt, plus an additional assessment, to demonstrate your competency in each competency hurdle assessment task. If you fail to meet the hurdle requirement, you will receive a fail grade for the unit.

Learning outcomes
- Apply integrated knowledge, skills, attitudes and clinical experience in pharmacy practice in order to practise effectively and professionally.
- Demonstrate a sound understanding of, and work within, the legal, professional and ethical framework for pharmacy practice in Australia.

- Demonstrate self-management, including application of organisational skills, management of work issues and interpersonal relationships in pharmacy practice.
- Adopt the principles of life-long learning, including demonstration of reflective practice and the ability to apply educational, research or clinical theories to inform professional change when required.
