Overview

This unit will focus on developing your knowledge of child and youth mental health, and developing your skills to support their parents and families. You will learn about common mental disorders impacting children, youth, and parents/carers, and the bidirectional relationships that intrapersonal, interpersonal, and social factors have with child and youth mental health. You will develop an understanding of the role of parenting in child and youth mental health, and interpersonal skills for communicating with parents about their parenting behaviours, and how they can support their child’s mental health. You will develop the ability to identify and discuss unique cultural, ethical, legal, and health-policy considerations relevant to working with children and youth, and those from diverse backgrounds.

Learning outcomes

  1. Discuss the bidirectional relationships that intrapersonal, interpersonal, and social factors have with child and youth mental health.
  2. Discuss the importance of relevant legislative, ethical, and health policy considerations when working with children, youth, and families.
  3. Discuss the importance of a ‘collaborative care’ approach when working with other family-facing professionals to support families for child and youth mental health.
  4. Apply knowledge of evidence-based parenting principles for child mental health when providing parenting support in preventive and community settings
  5. Demonstrate skills in reflective practice and perspective-taking when supporting parents for their child’s mental health

Workload

2 hours of tutorials per week, 8 times per semester - 7 tutorials held in-person, 1 tutorial held online. 1 hour unit induction tutorial in Week 1. 2 hours per week of self-paced guided online modules. 3 x 1 hour recommended synchronous online sessions for assessment support across the semester. Preparation: 8 hours of background reading/preparation, workshops and assessment tasks per week. Attendance at workshops is recommended in order to successfully complete in-class activities and related assessment tasks.
