Overview

Positive psychology is the ‘science of a life well-lived’. In this unit, you will learn about a range of concepts and theories related to the science of well-being, such as positive emotions, relationships, acts of kindness, and getting into the flow state. You will get to explore tools that positive psychology offers, including measures of well-being, and practices that assist people to move towards a more flourishing life. You will engage in personal evaluations of and reflections on your character strengths and virtues. You will work in groups on a social media project to examine scientific approaches to well-being, and engage in debates and discussions on contemporary issues related to positive psychology.

Learning outcomes

  1. Identify the key theoretical pathways towards well-being in positive psychology.
  2. Critically explore discussions and debates about the relevance and limitations of positive psychology theories and practices.
  3. Apply appropriate positive psychology tools such as measurements and practices for personal growth and wellbeing.
  4. Critically reflect on the benefits and challenges of applying empirically supported positive psychology practices to your own life.
  5. Communicate appropriately positive psychology content to a range of audiences.

Workload

2 hours of online lecture recordings per week. 2 hours of in-person tutorials ten times per semester. Preparation: 4 hours of prescribed reading/multimedia learning resources per week. Four hours of private study (e.g. completion of experiential exercises, and preparation of written assignments). Attendance at tutorials is recommended in order to successfully complete in-class activities, interact with teaching team in-person, and related assessment tasks.
