Overview

This unit will provide you with a theoretical and practical overview of assessment and intervention that adheres to evidence-based practice. More specifically, this will include: 1) coverage of the theoretical background relating to the development of classes of tests; 2) scoring and interpretation of a range of psychological tests and classification tools; 3) exploration of a number of evidence-based therapeutic modalities that can be implemented with individuals experiencing common psychological presentations; and 4) reflection opportunities relating to client and clinician factors that can influence the planning and implementation of assessment and intervention methods in various psychological settings.

Learning outcomes

  1. Evaluate theoretical bases, limitations, and ethical considerations related to the use, interpretation, and reporting results of psychological assessment tools;
  2. Employ a range of psychological assessment tests appropriate to the various fields of psychological practice;
  3. Critically synthesize assessment data and integrate contemporary scholarly research to demonstrate evidence-based practice in professional psychological report writing;
  4. Reflect a range of possible client and clinician factors that shape the planning and implementation of psychological interventions, as part of an ongoing commitment to fitness for practice;
  5. Devise appropriate actions, including intervention strategies and formal recommendations, for positive client outcomes.

Workload

You should expect to spend an average of 20-25 hours per week. Broadly, this time will cover: Video materials (2hrs) Synchronous & asynchronous discussion (2hrs) Synchronous web-based 'class-time' for skills-based activities (2hrs) Weekly readings (4-6hrs) Weekly skills-based assessment (4-6hrs, including formative assessment) Knowledge-based assessment (4-5hrs, including revision) Each week there will be a one hour ‘Live class’, facilitated by your instructor. This will be followed by a live office hour, where you can ask questions and chat with your classmates and instructor about anything to do with the unit or psychology in general.
