Overview

The unit aims to familiarise you with the steps required to become a registered psychologist in Australia, and the various career pathways available, both specific to and beyond the profession of psychology. The unit will assist you to identify and enhance specific employability skills acquired throughout the undergraduate study of psychology, and the ways in which such knowledge and skills can be relevant to other industries. As part of this unit you will develop resume based materials and a career plan so that your pathway in psychology can be envisaged.

Learning outcomes

  1. Design effective solutions to challenges faced by psychology professionals;
  2. Critically reflect on own fitness for practice as a psychology professional, including own behaviour, attitudes, and values, as part of the continuous process of self-development;
  3. Demonstrate key employability skills, such as communication, problem-solving, and teamwork;
  4. Critically evaluate the value of psychological knowledge in the general context of work and life;
  5. Synthesise self understanding, attitudes and behaviours and identifying gaps for learning to meet industry needs by incorporating appropriate education, work, and learning opportunities.

Workload

You should expect to spend an average of 20-25 hours per week. Broadly, this time will cover: Video materials (2hrs) Synchronous & asynchronous discussion (2hrs) Synchronous web-based 'class-time' for skills-based activities (2hrs) Weekly readings (4-6hrs) Weekly skills-based assessment (4-6hrs, including formative assessment) Knowledge-based assessment (4-5hrs, including revision) Each week there will be a one hour ‘Live class’, facilitated by your instructor. This will be followed by a live office hour, where you can ask questions and chat with your classmates and instructor about anything to do with the unit or psychology in general.
