Overview

Based on the scientist-practitioner model, the practice of psychology is evidence-based, requiring competence in the critical analysis of research literature, and knowledge of appropriate research methodologies. This unit will help you to develop this skill set and culminates in the submission of a research project. Your research project will be conducted under the guidance of an academic supervisor. You will be offered key seminars throughout the unit to provide additional support and guidance. These will assist you to develop an understanding of how research findings can be translated into policy, applied knowledge, and improved treatments, whilst developing essential research communication skills in a range of media for diverse audiences. In this unit you will collect and analyse data, and interpret and communicate these results in written and oral formats to audiences including academics, psychologists, and non-psychologists.

Learning outcomes

  1. Identify gaps in clinical psychology practice and research for further investigation
  2. Apply methodologies relevant to clinical psychology within the conduct of a research project
  3. Implement ethical research practices
  4. Select, apply and interpret appropriate data analysis techniques
  5. Explain the clinical relevance of research findings and how findings may be transformed into policy, applied knowledge, or improved treatments
  6. Prepare a comprehensive written research report or manuscript for publication in accordance with the relevant professional and academic standards
  7. Effectively communicate research methods and findings to non-psychologists in clinical and other settings
  8. Summarise research findings for academic audiences, orally, visually and in writing.

Workload

Four ninety-minute online seminars across both semesters for a total of 12 hours. Research activities: Up to 4 hours per week including laboratory/research activities and research supervision meetings with the academic supervisor, for a maximum of 96 hours. Preparation / Self-directed study: Up to three hours per week including engaging with the literature and preparation for assessment tasks, for a maximum of 72 hours.
