Overview

You will develop skills in leadership and advocacy to promote equity, access, and health promotion within allied health and the health and disability sectors more broadly. You will analyse leadership models across a range of different health and advocacy contexts, and examine the role of policy for improving health outcomes for local and global communities. You will also develop and demonstrate skills associated with effective learning and teaching including methods of fostering learning in others. You will develop graduate capabilities related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other cultures across the elements of respect, communication, reflection, advocacy, and safety and quality.

Learning outcomes

  1. Describe theories and skills of effective learning and teaching, and apply these to support the learning of other health professionals;
  2. Compare and contrast the theories and models of leadership within health;
  3. Analyse a range of public policy issues including equity, equality, and social justice, and propose allied health specific interventions that address these issues;
  4. Integrate advocacy principles to influence policies made by individuals, organisations, and governments at local, national, and international levels;
  5. Develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes to collaboratively address racism in healthcare;
  6. Apply and analyse critical pre-employment information and processes to support entry into clinical practice.

Workload

On-campus: You are required to attend and participate in two blocks of campus-based study that run respectively at the start and end of the semester. This will consist of approximately 15 hours seminars, 5 hours of tutorials, and 10 hours of private study related to seminar and tutorial preparation and revision. Off-campus: To allow for flexibility around placement allocations and other coursework, you will complete the unit content through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous off-campus activities. An average of 8-10 hours of private study is expected over the semester, primarily spent on completing online modules, readings, and working on assessment tasks. An additional 9 hours of online-live tutorials will be scheduled over the semester.
