Overview

In this unit, you will explore the fundamental physical principles and clinical applications of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). You will learn how MRI compares with other diagnostic imaging techniques and develop knowledge of the magnetic and radiofrequency interactions that underpin image formation. You will also examine the physical components of MRI systems, patient safety considerations, and the use of advanced imaging applications such as functional, dynamic, and spectroscopic MRI. You will have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge through case-based discussions and practical exercises that develop your ability to analyse, justify, and optimise MRI protocols. By the end of the unit, you will be able to evaluate critically MRI techniques for routine and emerging clinical applications and contribute meaningfully to collaborative decision-making in MRI practice.

Learning outcomes

  1. Evaluate the advantages and limitations of MRI compared to other imaging modalities, and justify its use for specific clinical scenarios.
  2. Explain the physical principles and engineering requirements that underpin MRI system design and clinical operation.
  3. Analyse how imaging parameters influence image contrast, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and spatial resolution in MRI.
  4. Assess critically pulse sequence strategies, including spin-echo and gradient-echo techniques, and their suitability for diverse clinical applications.
  5. Apply clinical knowledge collaboratively to select appropriate MRI protocols across anatomical regions, identify common image artifacts, and justify corrective strategies.
  6. Evaluate advanced MRI techniques considering their current and potential roles in diagnostic radiography.

Workload

6 hours of workshops per week. You are expected to undertake one hour of additional self directed learning activities for each contact hour.
