Overview

You will build upon your clinical expertise and professional experience and complement your existing knowledge about appearances on radiographic images in the field of emergency image interpretation of the chest and abdomen in this unit. You will apply a systematic methodology to interpret radiographic images involving emergency conditions affecting the chest and abdomen in adult and paediatric patients. You will learn how to use evidence-based information to communicate your findings of both normal and abnormal radiographic appearances of the chest and abdomen. You will increase your capability in decision making and clinical judgement which can be communicated in acute care settings. You will learn to contextualise the practice of radiographic image interpretation of the chest and abdomen in the broader context of the healthcare system and patient management.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply clinical signs and/or symptoms to the abnormal radiographic appearances of the chest and abdomen.
  2. Apply a systematic and logical approach to the radiographic evaluation of the chest and abdomen.
  3. Interpret radiographs associated with emergency conditions affecting the chest and abdomen of adult and paediatric patients to distinguish between normal and abnormal radiographic appearances.
  4. Compose descriptions of radiographic appearances on radiographs involving trauma and non-trauma pathologies of the chest and abdomen affecting adult and paediatric patients.
  5. Apply clinical decision rules and knowledge of the measurement of accuracy and error in the interpretation of radiographic images of the chest and abdomen.
  6. Display effective interprofessional communication skills by employing appropriate terminology to alert other members of the health care team to abnormal and normal radiographic appearances.

Workload

Online off campus. Standard expectations that you will engage in 6 hours of teacher directed learning activities and 6 hours of self-directed study.
