Overview

This unit will introduce you to undertaking a research project in one of the core disciplines in science. You will work with an academic supervisor on either an experimental or theoretical project. You will develop research skills including reviewing and critically analysing literature, project management, data gathering and analysis, and communication of scientific results in both an oral and written format.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate an ability to synthesise and critically evaluate relevant scientific literature associated with the research project;
  2. Plan aspects of a research project and manage project timelines;
  3. Communicate effectively, both in written and oral formats, with your supervisor, colleagues and other project-related staff;
  4. Demonstrate clear record-keeping skills of the work completed;
  5. Demonstrate the ability to generate, collate or access appropriate data and analyse and interpret data using appropriate methods;
  6. Communicate scientific research findings via oral presentations and written reports.

Workload

An average of 12 hours of study per week during semester or a total of 144 hours throughout the project which is split between supervisor meetings, research group meetings, independent research, collaborative research and work towards completion of assessments. The proportions of time spent on these different aspects of the research work will vary during the semester.
