Overview

This unit introduces you to contemporary thinking about working with materials, the unique properties of specific material, like glass, and the potential for material transformation in creative practices. The unit will focus on the development of processes specific to the cast object, including a consideration of the readymade or found object. Drawing on design and fine art histories and methodologies you will explore a range of processes using glass and other materials used in contemporary sculpture. You are encouraged to investigate traditional as well as contemporary materials.

Learning outcomes

  1. Develop studio processes that generate creative research in various sculptural materials;
  2. Apply conceptual and material understanding of different casting, forming and finishing processes in the context of contemporary object and sculptural production;
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of material propositions appropriate to the concepts under investigation;
  4. Critically reflect on the place of the design and sculptural object in various material expressions in the fields of contemporary creative practice art, nationally and internationally;
  5. Position and articulate the aesthetic, theoretical and historical context of your creative practice;
  6. Demonstrate abilities to safely and effectively use specialist material processes and equipment to generate outcomes.

Workload

12 hours per week including 4 contact hours plus 8 hours of independent study and studio practice.
