In this unit, you will gain foundational knowledge in linguistics and phonetics, focusing on the structure and function of language and speech sounds. You will explore key concepts in phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics and develop skills in transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet. You will apply linguistic and phonetic principles to analyse speech and language. Through practical exercises and case examples, you will build essential skills required for speech pathology practice in the future.

Learning outcomes
- Acquire transcription skills and apply to speech samples, using the International Phonetic Alphabet;
- Apply fundamental phonetics knowledge and skills when analysing speech production;
- Analyse speech and language samples by applying fundamental knowledge and principles of linguistics;
- Discuss how sociolinguistics and cultural, individual and linguistic diversity impact the management of communication difficulties.
Workload
This unit will have 6 hours of teacher-directed study per week (including 1 hour of lectures, 2 hours of online learning activities, and 3 hours of on-campus workshops). Additionally, there are 6 hours of self-directed study per week, making the total workload of 12 hours per week. Total workload per semester: 144 hours
