Overview

In this unit you will be introduced to the developmental foundations, clinical features, and evidence-based management of speech sound disorders in children. You will explore typical speech sound acquisition and discuss the characteristics and risk factors of speech sound disorders of unknown origin. Furthermore, through case-based learning and practical tasks, you will learn how to compare and contrast evidenced based assessment tools, determine classification subgroups in the diagnosis of speech sound disorders, and evaluate and justify evidence-based intervention approaches. There will also be a focus on how to communicate and collaborate effectively with the client, family and interprofessional team in order to deliver patient centred and culturally responsive care in your management of speech disorders. You will integrate theory with practical application and build your clinical reasoning skills through a variety of teaching and learning activities.
