Overview

In this unit, you will develop your knowledge and skills in research literacy, which will support clinical decision-making and evidence-based speech pathology practice. You will learn how to combine the different aspects of evidence-based practice in managing communication and swallowing disorders. You will learn how to formulate structured clinical questions, how to identify literature from a range of databases and how to evaluate the quality of selected research papers. Then you will apply findings to support your future learning and practice in the profession of speech pathology.

Learning outcomes

  1. Discuss the fundamentals principles of evidence-based practice, inclusive of its role in the profession of speech pathology.
  2. Differentiate between the various levels and types of evidence and its application to research design.
  3. Appraise the quality and relevance of evidence using various appraisal techniques.
  4. Apply evidence-based decision making to clinical practice and in defined contexts when managing communication and swallowing disorders.
  5. Communicate evidence-based findings related to the management of communication and swallowing disorders to a variety of audiences using different modalities.

Workload

6 hours of teacher-directed study per week, including 1 hour of lectures, 3 hours of online learning activities, and 2 hours of workshops. 6 hours per week of self-directed study. Total per week = 12 hours
