Family violence is a prevalent social issue with significant physical, financial, emotional and resource costs for individuals and communities. Family violence is also a major driver of mental health problems, and is commonly encountered in mental health and wellbeing service settings. In this unit you will be introduced to contemporary knowledge and theories informing our current understanding of family violence and critically examine how family violence impacts upon a diverse range of individuals. You will also learn about current family violence legislation and policy, and some of the key approaches to assess and support responses to family violence. Throughout the unit you will be encouraged to critically reflect upon your personal views, values and assumptions about family violence.

Learning outcomes
- Analyse the drivers and reinforcing factors associated with family violence from a variety of theoretical positions and practice-based frameworks.
- Analyse the multiple, complex and unique impacts of family violence on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities, including understanding intergenerational trauma and the causes and impacts of lateral violence.
- Examine the multiple and complex impacts of family violence on diverse populations, individuals, families and the broader community.
- Apply principles of Trauma Informed Practice and evaluate contemporary approaches to practice in responding to family violence.
- Critically examine the ways in which family violence legislation and policy shape family violence prevention strategies.
- Critically evaluate your personal views, values and assumptions about the drivers of family violence.
Workload
This unit is offered to on campus students. The unit will utilise blended learning approaches with 6 hours of teacher directed learning activities. Each week there will be pre-class learning activities for students to complete prior to lectures and tutorials. In addition, students are expected to engage in up to 6 hours of self-directed study per week, related to unit content matter.
