Overview

This unit will help you gain foundational knowledge and skills required to practice in the social work profession by providing practical experience in various practice areas. It includes at least 500 hours of supervised field education, allowing you to observe, participate, and analyse the role of social work in a health or human services setting. The ASSW requires you to undertake 2 placements in diverse fields of practice and context. The assessments are designed to assist you in the evolution of your practice as a lifelong learner and a reflective practitioner in a real life practice based setting.

Learning outcomes

  1. Explain and apply the AASW Code of Ethics to the practice context or setting.
  2. Apply culturally safe practices and prioritise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s diversity, strengths, and knowledge.
  3. Adapt knowledge and skills of advocacy and cultural diversity aimed at achieving fair and equitable access for people to resources.
  4. Adapt practice to work inclusively and respectfully with cultural difference and diversity.
  5. Adapt theory and research and show advocacy within a social work knowledge framework.
  6. Justify decisions based on a holistic assessment of people’s risks, needs, strengths, goals, and preferences.
  7. Propose ways of strengthening and promoting social work’s identity and professional standing.
  8. Synthesise feedback and critical reflection and set goals to strengthen practice through supervision.
  9. Appraise skills and knowledge to maintain, improve, and set goals to broaden professional development.

Workload

Attend a 500 hour placement in an agency deemed appropriate by the AASW as a suitable second year placement. You are expected to attend up to 14 hours of integrated seminars with the Field Education team throughout your placement. Up to 7 hours will be within the first 250 hours of placement and the other remaining 7 hours will be in the second half of placement.
